Starting A Business Or Expanding In Dubai? Secure Your VAT Registration Correctly!

Our team ensures your business is correctly registered for all applicable taxes, fulfilling the initial regulatory steps.

The KSB Advantage

Submitting an accurate VAT registration prevents administrative delays and protects your firm from immediate statutory fines. Operating from Aspin Commercial Tower, Office 4816, Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai, KSB Consultancy manages your complete EmaraTax application process.

Determining when and how to register for VAT requires careful evaluation of your financial turnover, commercial contracts, and strategic expansion plans.

  • Support across all corporate entity structures, including mainland firms, free zone establishments, non-resident suppliers, and tax groups.

  • Precision review protocols to avoid application rejections, statutory queries, or missed deadline penalties.

Mandatory and Voluntary Registration Thresholds

UAE tax law establishes clear financial criteria to determine your business's registration obligations.

Categorising your business transactions accurately as standard-rated (5%), zero-rated (0%), or exempt is essential for calculating your threshold position correctly.

  • Mandatory Threshold

You are required to register when your taxable supplies and imports exceed AED 375,000 over the previous 12 months, or if you anticipate exceeding this threshold within the next 30 days.

  • Voluntary Threshold

You can choose to register voluntarily once your taxable supplies, imports, or taxable expenses exceed AED 187,500 over the past 12 months. Early registration allows commercial startups to recover input VAT paid on capital investments, office fit-outs, equipment, and professional services.

  • Below AED 187,500

Entities whose turnover and expenses remain below this threshold are not eligible to register.

Non-Resident Business Registration

Statutory registration thresholds do not apply to foreign companies with no physical establishment in the UAE. If a non-resident business makes taxable supplies within the UAE where no domestic recipient is obligated to account for the tax under the reverse charge mechanism, the non-resident entity must register for VAT prior to making its initial supply. Foreign enterprises selling goods or services locally cannot rely on the AED 375,000 threshold buffer.

Our Streamlined Registration Process

1. Eligibility Review: We examine your historical turnover, projected sales, and operational contracts to verify whether mandatory or voluntary registration applies.

2. File Preparation: We review your commercial documentation, trade details, and owner identification to ensure all data matches FTA formatting standards.

3. EmaraTax Submission: As your appointed representative, we complete and lodge your formal registration application through the official FTA EmaraTax portal.

4. TRN Securitisation: Upon FTA approval, we obtain your 15-digit Tax Registration Number (TRN) and confirm your assigned tax return filing frequency.

5. Operational Integration: We provide actionable guidelines to help your accounting team issue VAT-compliant invoices and structure ledgers for routine reporting.

Late Registration Fines and Consequences

Failing to submit your VAT registration application within 30 days of crossing the mandatory threshold results in an administrative penalty of AED 10,000 under Cabinet Decision No. 40 of 2017, as amended, most recently by Cabinet Decision No. 129 of 2025. Beyond the initial fine, a late-registered business remains accountable for all unpaid output VAT on taxable supplies made from the statutory date registration was due, even if VAT was never collected from customers.

Frequently asked questions

  • How long does the FTA take to issue a VAT Tax Registration Number (TRN)?

Once submitted through the EmaraTax portal with all verified information, the FTA typically processes applications within 5 to 10 business days, issuing the TRN electronically.

  • Can related UAE companies register together as a single Tax Group?

Yes, two or more legal entities operating in the UAE under common ownership or control can register as a Tax Group, provided they meet the FTA's economic, financial, and organizational relationship criteria.

  • What is the difference between zero-rated and exempt supplies for threshold calculations?

Zero-rated supplies are taxable supplies taxed at 0%, which count toward both mandatory and voluntary registration thresholds and permit full input VAT recovery. Exempt supplies are not taxable supplies, do not count toward thresholds, and do not permit input VAT recovery.

  • Can a foreign business register for VAT in the UAE without a local branch?

Yes, non-resident businesses making taxable supplies in the UAE where the recipient does not apply the reverse charge mechanism must register for VAT directly on EmaraTax regardless of turnover volume.

  • Is VAT registration mandatory for Free Zone companies?

Free Zone companies are subject to the same AED 375,000 mandatory and AED 187,500 voluntary turnover thresholds as mainland companies, regardless of whether they operate inside a Designated Zone.
